Google Boost Will Fail

By Matthew Moskowitz

Yesterday, Google announced their latest product called Google Boost. In short, Boost allows local business owners to promote their business listing on Google by having it appear in the “sponsored links” section when appropriate, at a cost. If you are a Thai Restaurant in San Francisco, and someone in San Francisco searches for “Asian Food”, well now your listing with phone number, address, ratings, even videos will appear on the top of the page. The business only pays when someone clicks on the ad.

Having worked with local business owners for the past 3 years, my humble opinion is this is another Google product that is destined for failure (Google Wave, Google base, Google Local mobile coupons, etc) . Here are 2 reasons why…

  1. The Groupon Model is changing the way small business owners think about advertising, and specifically about how to track campaign results. With Groupon, a small business owner will know exactly how many of their coupons are redeemed, and subsequently the cost and effectiveness of each campaign. It puts them in control. When you move to a pay-per-click model like Google Boost, you know how many clicks your ad is receiving, but the owner has no way of knowing if those clicks are converted into sales.   Small Business owners hate that. Obviously, this is also one of the reasons why print has been dying.

  1. In General terms, most small business owners don’t even know that you can create a business profile on Google. In fact, according to their statistics only 2 million of the 50 million (4%) small business owners in the U.S. have claimed their page. Google acknowledges this in their press release by saying “Hopefully you’ve gone to Google Places to claim your free business listing that appears on Google and Google Maps.”  Google can keep hoping but from my experiences, most small business owners don’t have the awareness, time or knowledge to even use the free service.

Did our Poll prove Anything?

Over the past few days, we asked New Yorkers to vote on their favorite Collective Buying Sites, outside of Groupon and Living Social. 666 (yes, exactly) people voted and the results are below. Congratulations to KGB Deals for winning and taking in 34% of the vote.  But what does our poll prove? If you ask us, the wide range of votes drives home the overwhelming need for aggregators.

While we wish we could gloat about uncovering the true rankings of the players in the space, the truth is that the companies who performed best in our poll were the ones who best leveraged Twitter to urge their user base to vote (also impressive).

Or maybe the vote hinges upon the company who has the best band recognition (See this Super Bowl Commercial)??

But what can be taken away from this poll, is the obvious and glaring need for aggregators such as ourselves,  Yipit, and DailyD, who just raised $5 million in funding to focus on family deals.  In New York alone there are over 20 sites (for now) offering these type deals. Who has time to check all of those emails? Getting all your deal information in 1 place is extremely convenient.  Why choose your favorite when you can see them all?

Sometime in the future, we may see increased consolidation which will leave only a handful of group-buying companies standing (and eliminate the need for aggregators). We’ve seen a few instances of this already and always hear mumblings of potential deals on the horizon, but realistically, we are years away from consolidating companies having a real impact on the space.

We may also see increased “Recommendation” capabilities in the future which would allow anyone to only receive the deals they care about but we also think this years away. Consider my case where I’m always on the lookout for a good Pizza or Beer deal at a Sports Bar, BUT ALSO am interested in seeing the laser hair removal deals (to buy for my wife!). Let’s see your recommendation engine tackle that!

The point is, for the foreseeable future, aggregators, where you can see ALL deals in your city will continue to be useful tools for savvy bargain hunters.  If you disagree, we invite you to tell us why in the comment section.

We think that seeing the ones on your block allow you to make even better purchase decisions but maybe we’re biased (I bought a Groupon months ago but the restaurant isn’t in my neighborhood so the coupon is still hanging on my refrigerator).

And just for full disclosure, http://www.8coupons.com/ receives commissions ranging from 10-20% of gross sales on most collective buying deals that we post on our site.
