Concert For Peace at Lincoln Center
Monday, January 18, 2010 @ 7:30 PM
Avery Fisher Hall
In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr., Day, Jonathan Griffith will conduct Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace, accompanied by film, as well as Jenkins’ Requiem. Jenkins, the UK’s most popular living composer, will be composer-in-residence for the concert. Large in both scope and scale, The Armed Man is a profoundly moving yet very accessible work, a compelling account of the descent into war and its terrible consequences. The Armed Man interpolates a number of different texts within the usual Mass form including Malory, Dryden, Swift, Tennyson, Kipling, the Koran, and the Mahàbharàta. Jenkins’ Requiem, a mass for the souls of the dead, highlights the cyclical nature of life, death, and rebirth. In his trademark style, the music incorporates Western melodic style with ethnic and world music elements. Featuring Distinguished Concerts Singers and Orchestra International.

A Heroes’ Tribute: Clausen’s Memorial & Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass
Tuesday, January 19, 2010 @ 8:00 PM
Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage, CARNEGIE HALL
Distinguished Concerts International New York (DCINY) will present a special concert honoring the resilience and spirit of the Heroes of 9/11. Maestro James Meaders will be conducting Rene Clausen’s Memorial, a stunning 30-minute piece that was commissioned by the American Choral Directors Association (ADCA) in 2002. It debuted in February 2003 at the Nobel Peace Prize Forum (Moorhead, MN), and captures the emotional and spiritual elements of the September 11th tragedy. Although composed to reflect this horrific event, the work is likewise dedicated to all victims of senseless violence. Maestro Kevin Riehle will lead the second half of the program conducting Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass or Missa in Angustiis (“Mass for troubled times”). When written in the summer of 1798, Napoleon had won four major battles with Austria in less than a year. But he was dealt a stunning defeat in the Battle of the Nile by British forces led by Admiral Horatio Nelson, and the work was subsequently renamed. Universally recognized Haydn scholar H.C. Robbins Landon described this mass as “arguably Haydn’s greatest single composition”.
